Temporary Works Design
DVC Engineering, a structural and civil engineering consultancy, provides temporary works design services to main contractors and specialist subcontractors across London and the South East. Our temporary works packages are practical, clearly documented and produced to meet the requirements of the site's temporary works coordinator and Building Control.
Temporary Works Design for Commercial Projects
Temporary works design is a critical discipline on commercial construction and refurbishment projects. Propping arrangements, facade retention structures, excavation support systems and formwork designs must be structurally sound, compatible with the construction programme and clearly communicated to the site team. Failures in temporary works design have serious consequences for programme, cost and, most importantly, the safety of the workforce.
DVC Engineering provides temporary works design services as part of a wider commercial structural appointment, or as a standalone commission for contractors who require engineering support for a specific temporary works challenge. Our designs are prepared by engineers experienced in commercial construction and presented in a format that satisfies the requirements of the site's temporary works coordinator and the principal contractor's health and safety management system.
We work in accordance with BS 5975: Code of Practice for Temporary Works Procedures and the Permissible Stress Design of Falsework, providing the level of engineering rigour that commercial contractors require and expect.
Our Temporary Works Design Services
Propping and Shoring
Structural propping and shoring designs are required wherever existing structure needs to be supported during alteration or demolition works. DVC provides propping schemes for commercial and residential projects, covering prop sizing, base plate design, load transfer to the existing structure and sequence of works, in a format suitable for issue to the temporary works contractor.
Facade Retention
Retaining an existing facade while demolishing the structure behind it requires a carefully engineered temporary works system that supports the facade throughout the demolition and construction programme. DVC designs facade retention structures for commercial redevelopment projects, coordinating with the project team and demolition contractor to ensure the system is buildable and structurally adequate.
Excavation Support
Deep excavations in London's urban environment require temporary works that protect the excavation boundary, manage groundwater and prevent movement of adjacent structures. DVC provides excavation support designs including sheet pile, soldier pile and sheet pile wall assessments, supported by geotechnical input and coordinated with the main contractor's construction methodology.
Formwork and Falsework Checks
Complex formwork and falsework arrangements may require an independent structural check to satisfy the site's temporary works coordinator. DVC provides independent structural checks of formwork and falsework designs, producing signed and dated calculation checks in accordance with BS 5975.
Demolition Support Structures
Partial demolition of commercial buildings, particularly in party wall or close-proximity situations, requires temporary works to protect the retained structure and the adjacent buildings. DVC works with demolition contractors to provide the structural support designs needed to carry out the demolition works safely and in compliance with the temporary works procedure.
Structural Propping for Plant and Equipment
Heavy plant and equipment installations in commercial buildings, including generators, cooling plant and large mechanical units, sometimes require temporary propping of the building structure during installation. DVC provides temporary propping designs for plant installation projects, coordinated with the mechanical contractor's installation methodology.
Working with Main Contractors
We understand the temporary works procedures used by main contractors and we structure our appointments to integrate with those procedures. Calculations and drawings are provided in the format required by the site temporary works coordinator, and we respond promptly to technical queries from the site team throughout the construction programme.
Civil engineering held in-house
DVC Engineering is a structural and civil engineering consultancy, so drainage, SuDS, retaining walls and external works are designed in-house and coordinated with the structural frame and foundations under a single appointment — reducing clashes, rework and Building Control queries.
