DVC Engineering

Architectural design. Coordinated with engineering.

DVC Engineering now offers architectural design input alongside structural and civil engineering. For extensions, refurbishments, loft conversions and residential alterations, we can bring spatial design and technical coordination into one clearly defined project scope.

Design decisions informed by structural reality

An attractive layout is only useful when it can be approved and built. Bringing architectural design input into the same conversation as structural engineering helps identify likely beam depths, bearing requirements, drainage routes and construction constraints at an earlier stage. We agree responsibilities and design deliverables before work starts.

Feasibility and project brief

Discuss the proposed alterations, spatial priorities, site constraints and available drawings before committing to a detailed design. We identify the information needed to establish a realistic design scope.

Architectural drawings and design coordination

Architectural design input can be coordinated with structural calculations, foundation design and civil engineering. The precise drawing stages and responsibilities are agreed in the appointment.

Planning and approvals support

Where commissioned, we can coordinate existing and proposed drawings and planning submission information. Planning permission, listed building consent and Building Regulations approval are distinct processes.

Technical design for construction

The architectural layout, proposed structural openings, beam positions, drainage and construction details can be reviewed together, reducing avoidable clashes between design disciplines.

Typical project briefs

Rear, side-return and wraparound extensions
Loft conversions and dormer alterations
Open-plan remodelling and load-bearing wall removal
Period-property refurbishment and sensitive alterations
Residential feasibility and pre-purchase design review
Architectural and structural drawing coordination

Professional registration, statutory roles, insurance and the full scope of architectural services should be confirmed for the individual appointment. The presence of architectural design capability does not itself establish ARB or RIBA membership.

Frequently asked questions

Does DVC Engineering now offer architectural design?

Yes. Architectural design input is now available alongside our structural and civil engineering services. We confirm the responsible designer, design stages, deliverables and any specialist appointments in writing for each project.

Can I appoint DVC for both architectural drawings and structural calculations?

We can discuss a coordinated scope covering architectural design input and structural engineering. The fee proposal identifies what is included, who is responsible for each deliverable, and whether other consultants are needed.

Do you provide an ARB-registered architect?

Please ask us to confirm the registration and professional status of the person proposed for your appointment. In the UK, the title 'architect' is protected and registration can be checked using the Architects Registration Board register.

Will I need planning permission for a rear extension or loft conversion?

Some works may qualify as permitted development, but this depends on the property, the proposal, previous alterations and local restrictions. Listed buildings, conservation areas and other designations can introduce additional requirements. We review the proposed route before any application is prepared.

Does planning permission mean I do not need structural calculations?

No. Planning permission and Building Regulations approval are separate. Structural calculations and coordinated drawings may be required to demonstrate compliance with the structural requirements of the Building Regulations.

Can you design a basement extension to a London property?

Basement proposals need an early feasibility review of ground conditions, neighbouring foundations, water, temporary works, access and borough-specific planning requirements. We can review the structural scope and confirm what further investigations or specialist input would be required before offering a defined appointment.

Can you take over an existing architect's design?

We can review drawings prepared by another designer and discuss a coordinated structural or architectural design scope. We first establish copyright permissions, design responsibility, the information available and any limitations of the previous appointment.

How much does architectural design cost?

The fee depends on the property, the number of design options, survey information, required drawing stages and approval route. We provide a written scope and quotation rather than advertising an unsupported flat fee.
