Purley is a suburban area in the southern part of the London Borough of Croydon, situated at the foot of the North Downs chalk escarpment. The housing stock is predominantly Victorian and Edwardian semis and terraces in the lower areas, and larger inter-war and Edwardian detached properties on the hillside streets towards Riddlesdown and the Downs. The elevated position of some properties provides attractive views and generous plot sizes.

The chalk geology of the North Downs provides firm foundation conditions for the hillside properties, while the lower Purley areas are on clay and mixed deposits.
